Ready to hit the road on an epic summer road trip? This scenic road trip will take you along the coastal part of the state, hitting up all of our favorite beaches along the way! After all, what’s a summer road trip without a beach or two? Just about every stop along the way offers cabin rentals, so you can plan ahead and pick one that interests you so you can make the entire road trip an ideal weekend adventure. If not, the entire trip will take you just over five hours, point to point . . . but you’ll want to carve out some time so you can enjoy each of these scenic spots.
First up: Holly Beach! The area has been hit pretty hard by hurricanes in the past, but it always bounces back. Beachcombers will love snatching up all the seashells that wash onto the shores, and you can even drive right up on the beach! So don’t worry about finding a parking spot, just slap on some sunscreen and take a beautiful beach walk.
From Holly Beach, you’ve two options to take: you can head back north and hop on I-10 or you can take the more scenic route and drive along LA-82, which will take you through the Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge, Pecan Island, and then up through Abbeville and passing by Avery Island before you reach Cypremort Point State Park. Just keep in mind that with this route, you’ll need to take the Cameron Ferry which departs every 15 minutes. Now, about Cypremort Point State Park . . . this underrated state park is nestled along the Vermilion Bay, one of the most popular fishing spots in the area. The park has a lovely little stretch of beach to sink your toes in, and easily some of the most awe-inspiring sunsets in the state. There are cabins available to rent if you find yourself so mesmerized you just need more time to appreciate this lovely park. If not, onward we go!
Continuing on our scenic drive, our next stop leads us to the depths of Bayou Country where you’ll find Lake End Park in Morgan City, a stunning lakefront park overlooking Lake Palourde. Between the cypress trees and ancient oaks, you’ve got plenty of shade and if you didn’t park it for a night at Cypremort Point, then Lake End Park might be a good place to call home for a night. Their lakefront cabins give you that home-away-from-home feel while having some truly stunning views.
You're going to need to fuel up to continue onward, and boy do we have just the spot. While you’re in the area, be sure to pop into Rita Mae’s Kitchen for some down-home Southern specialties like seafood gumbo and crawfish étouffée.
Ending our journey at the tip of the boot, Grand Isle is the perfect place to visit during the summer because it has a little bit of something for everyone. Fisherman will have a blast chucking a line or two from the 100-foot pier, or taking a charter out to deeper waters. Louisiana’s only inhabited barrier island is also home to countless migratory birds passing through each season, so keep your eyes to the skies while there. Of course, the miles of beautiful beaches are the main reason we love this spot so much. If you really want to make a memory, bring your tent and rent a spot on the sand! At Grand Isle State Park, you can pitch a tent right on the beach and fall asleep to the sounds of the waves crashing onto the shore while gazing up at the millions of stars above.
