1. Kiroli Park
The 150 acres over at West Monroe’s park feature playgrounds, tennis courts, a dog park, and much more. 2. Briarwood
You’ll find Briarwood tucked away in the Kisatchie National Forest. The former home of renown botanist Caroline Dormon is open to the public March through May, August, and November. During the guided tour you’ll learn about the history of this amazing woman, how she was instrumental in preserving Louisiana’s only national forest, and the indigenous plants in the area. 216 Caroline Dorman Rd., Saline, Louisiana 71070.
3. Rock Chapel
Located in DeSoto Parish, this chapel was built in 1891 by Carmelite monks when there was a monastery nearby. Unfortunately, a fire destroyed the monastery in 1904, but this little chapel survived and has stood the test of time. You can find the chapel at 1746 Smithport Rd., Mansfield, LA 71052 and if you head over to the DeSoto tourist bureau beforehand, they’ll give you a key to the gate so you can go inside the chapel.
4. Abita Mystery House
This fun little folk shop is quirky, weird, and wonderful in the best ways. From junk to collectibles, you’ll come across hundreds of found objects and homemade inventions that you simply have to see to believe. 22275 Hwy. 36, Abita Springs, LA 70420.
5. USS Orleck
One of the most decorated US Navy ships since WWII, the USS Orleck was a Gearing-class destroyer from 1945-1982. Not only can you take tours aboard this magnificent ship, but you can also gather up all your friends and play a few rounds of laser tag! 604 N Enterprise Blvd., Lake Charles, Louisiana 70601.
6. Acadian Village
You’ll feel like you’ve been transported to another time at this open-air museum featuring Acadian life in the 19th century. From the doctor’s museum to the blacksmith shop, you’ll catch a glimpse of what life was like for our early Acadian ancestors. 200 Greenleaf Dr., Lafayette, Louisiana 70506.
7. Walter B Jacobs Memorial Nature Park
This peaceful Shreveport park features more than 5 miles of hiking trails through a beautiful pine-hickory-oak forest. The visitor center contains several exhibits and an outdoor aviary with several special of birds. 8012 Blanchard Furrh Rd., Shreveport, Louisiana 71107.
