Louisiana has some of the best sandwiches around. From traditional club sandwich to the good ole po’boy, we’ve compiled some of the best places you simply have to try.
1. Muffuletta (Central Grocery)
The muffuletta can be found all across restaurants in Louisiana, but none compare to the original over at Central Grocery in New Orleans. Founder Salvatore Lupo created this Sicilian inspired sandwich in 1906 and three generations later they're still going strong. Cured meats, provolone, mozzarella, and olive spread all on that signature bread is what makes this a quintessential New Orleans sandwich. Central Grocery is located at 923 Decatur St New Orleans, LA 70116
2. BBQ Shrimp (Chimes)
The original Chimes is located just outside LSU's campus and has been a staple for college students since 1983. Their commitment to great food, great beer, and great service is why we keep coming back for more. They have many specialty dishes, but their BBQ Shrimp po'boy is perfection on a plate. The original Chimes is located at 3357 Highland Rd Baton Rouge, LA 70802 but they've opened other locations in Baton Rouge and Covington as well.
3. Pork Belly (City Pork Deli & Charcuterie)
This neighborhood deli takes the pork sandwich to new levels. Korean braised pork belly, pickled carrots, cucumbers, cilantro and pâtés all nestled between French bread. All of their deli meats are slow-roasted, braised, or smoked in-house and you can really taste difference. Located at 2363 Hollydale Ave, Baton Rouge, LA 70808
4. Surf & Turf (Domilise's)
Blink and you'd miss it, but this is one of the best po'boy shops in Louisiana. This family run restaurant has been serving excellent food since 1918, and they're not going anywhere any time soon. Roast beef and shrimp collide in their take on surf & turf and it's definitely a match made in heaven. Located at 5240 Annunciation Street New Orleans, LA 70115
5. Shrimp (Herby-K's)
This place put their own spin on a shrimp po'boy by flattening out jumbo shrimp before frying them and topping them with a secret red sauce. There's a reason this place has had a loyal following for decades, and this open-faced sandwich is one of them. Herby-K's is located at 1833 Pierre Ave, Shreveport, LA 71103
6. Cajun Cuban (Katie's)
Katie's puts a Cajun spin on the classic Cuban and it's delicious. Roasted pork, grilled ham, pickles and cheese all served on lightly buttered French bread. Featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives this place has excellent roast beef, shrimp, and oyster po'boys that's been feeding the neighborhood for years. Their specialty is a colossal po'boy filled with oysters, fried shrimp, and catfish so large it's known as The Barge. Katie's is located at 3701 Iberville St, New Orleans, LA 70119
7. Club Sandwich (Maxwell's Market)
Maxwell's Market is your one stop shop for all your needs. Shop for your groceries and pick up a bottle of fine wine while you wait for your order from the deli. Just about everything from the deli is delicious, but our top picks are the club sandwich and the chicken salad sandwich. Maxwell's has three locations in Baton Rouge on Highland Road, Perkins Road, and Corporate Boulevard.
8. Fried Thin Catfish (Middendorf's)
Any Louisianian worth their salt will tell you to go to Middendorf's. When Louis Middendorf and his wife Josie started this business in 1934, they had no idea that it would become such a Louisiana institution. They're known for their thin fried catfish, which was an original recipe of Mama Josie and they continue to use her recipe today. Located at 30160 US-51, Akers, LA 70421
9. Blackened Catfish (Palmettos on the Bayou)
This place offers a fun and relaxed experience featuring authentic Cajun and creole cuisine. Their outdoor deck offers amazing views of Bayou Bonfouca, and their indoor dining room is filled with beautiful local art work, so no matter where you sit you'll be surrounded by Louisiana beauty. Featured above is their blackened catfish sandwich which is topped with an apple red cabbage slaw and tangy remoulade sauce. Located at 1901 Bayou Lane Slidell, LA 70458
10. Roast Beef (Bear's)
They say you can only judge a po'boy by how many napkins you use. Well, if that's the case we give this one 10/10 napkins. Hands down this is the best place to get a roast beef po'boy, but in honesty all of their sandwiches are delicious. There's always a long line to get in here, but it's well worth it. Bear's is located at 128 W. 21st. Avenue in Covington, LA 70433
