This fascinating attraction over in northeastern Louisiana gives visitors a chance to learn more about Louisiana’s earliest inhabitants. Poverty Point is a collection of earthworks built between 1650-700 BC by a group of Native Americans from the Poverty Point culture. Although they didn’t leave any written word behind, archaeologists and historians are constantly piecing together their day-to-day-lives by uncovering artifacts left behind. In its heyday, it was a massive settlement, trading center, and possibly even used for religious ceremonies.

Visitors can explore the 910-acre site and learn more about the history of the area, including viewing several artifacts that have been uncovered throughout the years. Poverty Point was designated a World Heritage Site in 2014, joining historical landmarks like Stonehenge, the Pyramids, and the Great Wall of China.

Located in St. Martin Parish, Lake Martin is part of the Cypress Island Preserve and one of the largest nesting colonies for water birds in Louisiana. For those seeking the chance to view wildlife, you can’t go wrong with Lake Martin. Home to hundreds of alligators, turtles, snakes, and more, it won’t take visitors long to find a gator in these waters.

There are trails nearby, and several tour companies that would love to take you out on the water for a one-of-a-kind swamp tour. If you can, stay until sunset and have your camera ready, because the views are simply phenomenal.
