Spain believed that their territory stretched over to the Calcasieu River, but the U.S. believed that their territory should extend to the Sabine River.

This resulted in a large patch of land that both sides claimed ownership of and the dispute continued for many years.
Until it was sorted out, both sides agreed that they wouldn’t allow settlers or their military into the disputed land. The area became known as the "neutral strip" or "no man’s land."

Soon, outlaws, runaway slaves, criminals, and army deserters began to move into the area. For many years, the region was known to be quite dangerous and many travelers avoided the area altogether.
After 16 years, the 1819 Adams-Onis Treaty put an end to the land dispute and marked the border at the Sabine River.
