If You Want To Make A New Orleanian Mad, Mispronounce These 9 Words
We take it for granted, but one sure-fire way to spot a tourist is watching them try to pronounce some of our street names. Words like Pontchartrain and Tchoupitoulas just roll off the tongue for us, but could certainly trip up an outsider. Here are some of our favorite most commonly mispronounced words in New Orleans.

CHOP-i-TOO-lus. The name comes from a long-gone Native American tribe that means "those who live at the river."

Bur-GUN-dee. You’d think it would be pronounced like the color, but that would be too easy.

You could go either way with this one. Some say PEA-can, some say puh-CAWN. And also PRAY-leen, or PRAW-leen. What do you say?

MARE-uh-nee. Just forget the "g" is even there.

CHARTER. Makes no sense, right?

PONT-cha-TRAIN. Just don’t overthink it.

If you’re talking about the city, then it’s New Or-LINDZ. If you’re talking about the Parish, then it’s Or-LEANS. Don’t ask why.
