If you grew up in NOLA, then you’ll most likely recognize these stores. Prepare for a blast from the past!
1. Krauss Department Store
Krauss Department opened in 1903 and had a good long run on Canal Street before closing its doors in 1997.
2. McKenzie’s
I can still remember the jingle, can you? This beloved bakery store had a good run from 1936 until 2000.
3. Maison Blanche
Founded in 1897 by Isidore Newman, an immigrant from Germany, Maison Blance was best remembered for its Christmas mascot, Mr. Bingle. The Canal Street store was closed in 1982 and the company went defunct in 1998 after being purchased by Dillard’s.
4. D.H. Holmes
The company was founded in 1842 and the headquarters were moved to the Canal Street location in 1849. By the end of the 19th century, it was the largest department store in the South. It was purchased by Dillard’s in 1989, but many locals remember this department store very well.
5. K&B
I don’t know about you, but I can still remember the distinctive smell of a K&B. This New Orleans drug store chain operated from 1905 until it was purchased by Rite Aid in 1997. Have you ever described something as "K&B purple?"
6. Rosenberg’s
You’ll never get that jingle out of your head. This furniture store closed down in the early 2000s, but the jingle will live on forever.
