New Orleans is a special place, no doubt about it. People travel from all over the world to experience our unique cuisine, culture, and history. When you grow up here, you forget that many of the things we do are specific to New Orleans, and may get some strange looks outside of the city. In no particular order, here are some of our favorites.

In New Orleans, you won’t find anyone telling you to "go south for 8 miles", but you will hear someone say "head towards the river about 10 minutes or so". So if you find yourself outside of New Orleans and giving directions, maybe stick to the cardinal directions.

Bartenders will definitely give you a strange look if you try to get your drink to go.

Sadly, this one will definitely get some strange looks, especially from cops.

It may be a typical greeting in New Orleans, but it will surely garner some strange looks outside of the Crescent City.

And sadly, your "sandwich" won’t be a po’boy.

We may call it a streetcar in New Orleans, but elsewhere its a tram, train, subway, etc.
