No One Does Beignets Like This One Historic Restaurant In New Orleans

Willig leased the charming creole-style cottage to Frank W. Mackie and together they opened up the Central Tea, Coffee, and Butter Depot. The store ran very successfully until a fire broke out in 1908 that destroyed roughly two square miles of the city, including the store. Like any good New Orleanian does, they rebuilt. This time, the store was bigger and better than ever: it featured a full service grocery store and a barn in the back so that they could make house deliveries on horse-drawn carriages. With the new building came a new name: Frank W. Mackie Grocer, and the store was a staple in the uptown neighborhood for many years. It changed ownership a few times over the years, but sadly it closed down in 1982.

From the name to the atmosphere when you step inside, you can feel the history of the building when you visit.

For those that remember visiting the grocery store, it may even be a little nostalgic.
