Antoine Alciatore opened the original restaurant on St. Louis Street, just a block away from where the current restaurant stands. He had no idea that the restaurant would become such a New Orleans institution.

During this time, you used to be able to enter through a secret door in the women’s restroom and receive a cup of coffee filled with alcohol. If you were asked where you received the illegal booze, the standard response was: "It’s a mystery to me."
