Antoine Alciatore opened the original restaurant on St. Louis Street, just a block away from where the current restaurant stands. He had no idea that the restaurant would become such a New Orleans institution.

Each of the dining rooms at Antoine’s has their own name and are steeped in history. Pictured above is the Mystery Room, which got its name due to Prohibition. During this time, you used to be able to enter through a secret door in the women’s restroom and receive a cup of coffee filled with alcohol. If you were asked where you received the illegal booze, the standard response was: "It’s a mystery to me."

Named for the richness of the sauce, this dish was actually invented by Antoine’s son, Jules in 1889.
