The Tranquility Of This Overlooked Park Near New Orleans Is Truly Special
City Park and Audubon Park are certainly magical urban oases that are a welcome retreat when you need to take a break from the hustle and bustle of city life. Just outside of New Orleans lies an often overlooked park that’s just begging to be visited, and you’re going to love it.

The park opened in 1982 and was named to honor the history of the property. Lafreniere park was once the site of a plantation owned by Nicolas Chauvin, who eventually changed his name to de la Freniere. In 1954, the land became the Magnolia Park Inc. Harness Racing Course, which was renamed to Jefferson Downs in 1959. Unfortunately, the racetrack was destroyed by Hurricane Betsy in 1965, and the racetrack was relocated. The property stood vacant for a number of years until Jefferson Parish purchased the property in the mid-1970s. Construction on the park began in 1977 and the park officially opened to the public in 1982.

The sunrises here are truly mesmerizing, so if you're an early riser, Lafreniere Park is a must.
