New Orleans is a special city, there’s no doubt about it. We have a unique culture, an amazing community, and award winning cuisine that’s unparalleled. There are so many things that seem like second nature to those that have lived here a long time, but if you’re new to the city, consider these 11 tips from longtime New Orleanians.
Hot and humid, and no matter how long you live here, you never really get used to it.
Good luck having a good hair day in 90% humidity. On the flip side, when the humidity dips below 80% it’ll feel amazing!

On the street, on a front porch, walking out of the grocery store… You never know when you’ll get swept up in a second line!

Yes, the French Quarter can be a lot of fun, but you’ll want to venture out into other neighborhoods to find those locally owned restaurants that serve the best food you’ve ever had. Or that one bar in your neighborhood that becomes your local watering hole. Get out and explore the city!
They’ll pop a tire if you’re not careful. Also, if there’s a puddle in the middle of the street, try to avoid it because there’s a good chance that pothole is HUGE and that’s really just a tiny lake.

New Orleans is known for its unique dishes. Gumbo, crawfish etoufee, jambalaya, poboys… The list goes on and on. Don’t be afraid to try new things, who knows, fried alligator may just be your new favorite dish!
Yes, you can buy alcohol pretty much anytime you want. Yes, you can even purchase it from gas stations and grocery stores down here, even on Sundays. You’re allowed to drink in public. We’re pretty chill when it comes to drinking. Just don’t overdo it.

Maybe it’s a New Orleans thing, maybe it’s a Southern thing, but over time you’ll get to know your neighbors so well that they’ll become like an extended part of your family. Building these relationships strengthens your neighborhood and the community. Plus, you’ll always have someone to borrow a cup of sugar from!
City park is a wonderful place to grab a coffee and take a leisurely stroll. If you’re up for an adventure, consider the short drive down to Barataria Preserve to be surrounded by the bayous and swamps while you walk along the boardwalk trails.
It’s a very special city that takes a part of your heart when you’re here.
