At the end of Canal Street sits one of the most haunted houses in New Orleans, and it just so happens to be one of the most popular thrill-seeking attractions in the city. Since opening in 2007, The Mortuary has been ranked as one of the best haunted houses, scaring hundreds of brave souls every fall. While it’s certainly an adrenaline-inducing experience, you may be surprised to learn that this haunted house is actually a haunted house. It’s been featured on several ghost hunting shows including the Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures, and it’s quite possible you may just have a paranormal experience as you make your way through the Hollywood-level theatrics.
The house was built in 1872 and served as the family home for Irish immigrants Mary Slattery and John Devonshire.
Mary and John lived here and raised their kids in the home until they sold it in 1905, and it passed ownership a few times over the years until 1928 when it was converted into a funeral home.
Seems strange to convert someone’s house into a funeral home, right?
Well, location, location, location. This particular home was smack-dab in the center of several cemeteries, making it an ideal location for a funeral home. PJ McMahon’s and Sons was a popular funeral home for over 70 years before it finally shut it doors. It fell into disrepair before, finally, in 2007, Jeff Borne purchased it with the intention of transforming it into a haunted house. It didn’t take long during the renovation process to realize there was more to this house than what meets the eye. Countless paranormal encounters and unexplained phenomenon drew the attention of paranormal investigators, who all believe this building holds the energies of spirits long gone.
