Just about a 30 minute drive from New Orleans, and you’ll find yourself in a beautiful wonderland of incredibly scenic marshes, bayous, swamps, and forests. When you need a break from the city, consider a shot road trip to this amazing nature preserve where you can see endless miles of marsh.

Located in Marrero, the Barataria Preserve is one of six sites that compromise the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve.

Established in 1907, the preserve’s 23,000 acres are filled with some of the most beautiful natural scenery in Louisiana.
The preserve is filled with dozens of boardwalk and gravel trails that will lead you on an incredible journey.

And it’s also an incredible place to do some wildlife viewing. From alligators to birds and everything in between, keep your eyes peeled and you’re guaranteed to see something.
If you take the Palmetto Trail to the Bayou Coquille Trail, you’ll come to the Marsh Overlook.

From the visitor’s center, you’re looking at about a two mile hike.
Once you get to the marsh overlook, you’ll be able to see for miles!

There are benches nearby to you can just sit back, relax, and take in one of the most beautiful views in southeastern Louisiana.

Barataria Preserve is located at 6588 Barataria Blvd, Marrero, LA 70072.

The Visitor Center is open Wednesday-Sunday 9:30am-4:30pm, but the trails are open daily from 9am-5pm.
