Originally designed as an open air market and named St. Roch after the yellow fever epidemic in the 1870’s. St. Roch is the patron saint of incurable diseases and lost causes, and after the the epidemic, the neighborhood, which was originally called "New Marigny", renamed itself as St. Roch neighborhood, so it was fitting that the market be called St. Roch Market.

The first renovations came after WWI, when the building was enclosed, then again in the 1930’s. Up until the 1950’s, the building was used as a multi-vendor market where locals could purchase fresh produce, butchered meats, and an assortment of prepared foods.

It was a successful business known for its seafood, hot plate lunches, and a place to buy live chickens.

And then suffered severe damage from Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The building was gutted following the storm, but sat vacant for many years.

They restored the building to its former glory, giving this historic building a new lease on life.

New vendors are frequently rotating in, so you can come back again and again to try them all.
