If you really want a beach that will take you away from it all, Rutherford Beach is a great choice. This beach is about 3.5 hours away from New Orleans and will give you a beautiful experience of the gulf without all the hustle and bustle of other gulf coast beaches.

This beach is one of a number of beaches that used to make up the popular "Cajun Riviera". Hurricane Rita and other storms did a number on this coast, however, so it has never been as populated since then.

It's a great place for shallow water canoeing and/or kayaking on the river and the Gulf of Mexico.
