Just outside of New Orleans lies an incredible natural oasis that must be seen to be believed. From swamps to cypress trees, Barataria Preserve is filled with some of the most beautiful natural landscape Louisiana has to offer, and it’s only a short drive from New Orleans. The connecting boardwalk trails and wildlife viewing opportunities make this New Orleans’ best bridge trail by far, and the best part is that it’s a great outdoor adventure that the whole family will love.
When you need to escape the city and surround yourself with beautiful bayous, marshes, and swamps, a trip to Barataria Preserve is an absolute must.
As you meander through the trails, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for wildlife. The preserve is home to over 200 species of birds plus an endless amount of alligators, turtles, snakes, and other swamp critters.
At the end of the Bayou Coquille Trail, you’ll come to a large bridge that has an incredible view of the bayou. Have your camera ready, you’ll want to snap some shots.
On the other end of the bridge, you’ll come to the marsh overlook. On a clear day, you could see for miles. There are several benches and shaded spots at this hidden gem, so sit for a spell and just take in the view before heading back.
