When you think of frozen desserts, ice cream is probably one of the first things to cross your mind, but gelato is an underrated sweet treat that might just be even better than ice cream. But what’s the difference? Both share the same three main ingredients: dairy, sugar, and air but the main difference comes from the proportions of each. Typically, ice cream contains a higher fat content and more air (due to the churning process) while gelato contains less air and a much lower fat content. Nutritional facts aside, gelato tends to have a much silkier texture than your traditional ice cream and is traditionally served about 10-15 degrees warmer than ice cream, allowing you to taste the flavors faster. If you’ve never had gelato before, you’re in luck because Piccola Gelateria features some of the best gelatos in New Orleans.
