Out of all of the incredible dishes New Orleans is known for, BBQ shrimp might just be the most underrated of them all. Sure, po’boys are delicious and we’d never turn down a bowl of gumbo or a freshly powdered beignet, but BBQ shrimp often gets overshadowed by our other iconic dishes, until now. Roll up your sleeves and grab some napkins, because the messy (but amazing) BBQ shrimp at Pascal’s Manale is simply irresistible. But what would you expect from the restaurant that invented the dish? Nestled underneath the ancient oaks on the corner of Napoleon and Dryades sits one of the most important culinary landmarks in New Orleans: Pascal’s Manale.
Known for its raw oyster bar, Pascal’s menu is full of all your favorite pastas like veal parmigiana, veal picatta, spaghetti and meatballs and many other options.
You’ll also find several steak and seafood dishes. Their expansive menu is just one of the reasons this restaurant has been a neighborhood favorite for well over a century.
Of course, no visit to Pascal’s Manale is complete without trying their signature dish: BBQ Shrimp. This iconic dish was actually invented right here in the 1950s.
Traditionally, BBQ shrimp are bathed in a spicy and tangy sauce and served with their shells on, so you’ll want to be sure you roll up your sleeves and grab a stack of napkins, because the best way to tackle this dish is with your bare hands.
If you visit during lunch, you can try their po’boy version, the BBQ shrimp sandwich, pictured below. Just be warned, this version is just as messy, but you’ll have plenty of that good old fashioned Leidenheimer French bread to soak up all those tasty juices.
