Louisiana’s wetlands represent 40% of the wetlands in the continental United States, and it’s all right at our back door. Getting outside of the city and exploring these beautiful bayous and swamps is a great activity the entire family will enjoy, and you have plenty of options. For a thrilling swamp tour, a high-speed airboat is ideal. Not only will you have the wind in your hair and sweeping views of the swamps, but these airboats allow access to parts of the swamps and bayous that other boats cannot access. Luckily, there’s one tour company just outside of New Orleans that would love to take you for a spin on one of their airboats and show you a side of Louisiana that will mesmerize you.
Louisiana has some of the most stunning natural scenery in the country, and it’s easily accessible. From boardwalk trails to pontoon boats, there are many different ways to get up close to these majestic waterways.
These airboats are powered by a 454 Chevy engine that can produce speeds of up to 35 miles per hour. The fan on the back of the boat will blow air that can reach up to 200 miles per hour!
The best thing about these airboats is that they allow you to access parts of the swamps that you can’t get to by other boats. These boats glide across the water, so they need much less water depth (we’re talking mere inches) than a regular boat.
During your tour, your Captain will share his knowledge of the swamps and bayous, the importance of protecting them, and more. These Captains grew up on these waters, and love giving personal tours of their backyard.
And of course, you’ll have ample wildlife viewing opportunities. In addition to the many species of birds that call the area home, you’ll see several alligators and turtles too. They get pretty close, so have your cameras ready!
Although keep in mind that gators tend to be more prevalent in the warmer months, you still have about a 50% chance of spotting one in the colder temperatures.
