Did you know that one of America’s first apartment buildings is right here in New Orleans? You’ve probably passed by it dozens of times, but next time you find yourself in Jackson Square you should pop in for a look around–it’s fascinating!

Right on St. Ann Street.

It’s part of the Lower Pontalba building, which was designed by the Baroness Micaela Almonester de Pontalba. The building was designed to serve as residences (apartments) and retail stores.

In 1921, the Pontalba family sold the Lower Pontabla Building to William Ratcliffe Irby, who left it to the Louisiana State Museum after his death.
