Anytime you visit a new city, you’ve got to make a point to stroll down their main street. These picture-perfect streets are often filled with fascinating history, incredible shopping, and local restaurants with tasty food that’ll win you over from the first bite. Louisiana has a thriving Main Street Program that’s been helping smaller towns across the state restore their main streets, but there’s one Main Street that’s easily one of the most beautiful in the entire country, and that honor belongs to good old Natchitoches, the oldest city in the state.
Few places are as enchanting as historic Natchitoches.
Established in 1714, Natchitoches is the oldest permanent settlement in the Louisiana Purchase, and a favorite destination for countless individuals from all over the world.
Nestled along the scenic Cane River, there’s endless attractions to enjoy while visiting this historic city.
Creole Plantations, museums, and an incredible Historic District that encompasses a massive 33 blocks are just a few of the wonderful attractions to fill up your day when visiting Natchitoches.

But no matter what time of year you visit, you'll be blown away by how charming Front Street it. This tiny but mighty street is your one-stop-shop for all your needs.
Established in 1863, it’s the oldest business in Natchitoches and the oldest general store in Louisiana. They have a massive collection of just about anything you could want (and some things you didn’t even know you needed). Good luck leaving this store without one or two impulse buys!
As you make your way along Front Street, you’ll be met with some truly lovely views of the Cane River.
These tasty little treats were invented right here in Natchitoches at Lasayone's, just one block over from Front Street. Learn more about Lasayone's in our previous article here.
