State Parks In Louisiana
Carolyn Harmon|March 13, 2024
What are some of the best state parks in Louisiana?
Chemin-A-Haut State Park (Bastrop): It is obvious that the designers of this lovely park had children in mind as you'll find two playgrounds and a wading pool. The park's swimming pool is open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Camping is available in RVs, tents, and cabins with options to stay near the day-use area or more secluded spots on Bayou Bartholomew, which the park overlooks.
Palmetto Island State Park (Abbeville): This pretty paradise is located on the Vermilion River giving access to a boat launch. The river provides excellent fishing, and if you like to kayak or canoe, the lagoons give a tour of the native plant and animal life. Camping is available in six vacation cabins or 95 campsites for RV camping with 20 of those sites offering a tent camping pad. The visitor center complex includes a water playground and bathhouse.
Chicot State Park (Evangeline Parish): The largest state park in Louisiana covers more than 6,400 acres that include Lake Chicot. Anglers come in droves for the record freshwater catches of crappie, largemouth bass, red-ear sunfish, and bluegill. A boathouse is provided with three boat launches and boat rental facilities. If you're more into the land, an extensive hiking trail surrounds the lake offering several primitive campsites. Much of the trail is geared toward mountain bikers. Enjoy the picnic areas, playground, and water playground in this magical space.
