Since its founding in the early 18th-century, Louisiana has had numerous islands surrounding its land mass. In fact, many say that it is the barrier islands that formed out in the gulf that kept Louisiana safe from the consistent threat of hurricanes. Louisiana barrier islands are at risk, however and many are simply eroding into the sea. There is a lot of work being done now to potentially save these islands, which could provide much needed protection from storms in the future. Here are some of the most beautiful islands found in Louisiana:
This Island can be found in Iberia Parish, off the central coast of Louisiana. It's located between Vermilion Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, only accessible by boat. The Marsh Island Wildlife Refuge is found here, and many wild birds and animals make their home here. It's a popular spot for fishing.
A state park now surrounds this small river island on the Vermillion river that is a real treat for anyone who gets to visit. This is the perfect place to stay if you're looking to explore nearby Avery Island, which is not a true Island, but a land area surrounded by many bayous and waterways.
This island is known as a barrier island, as it has served in the past as a buffer between the fierce Hurricanes of the Gulf of Mexico and the rest of the Louisiana coast. Like many such islands, however, Grand Isle has suffered from severe erosion, and the land loss here has reached epic proportions in recent years.
Breton Island is another barrier island found near the mouth of the Mississippi River. Parts of the Breton National Wildlife Refuge can be found here, a refuge established in 1904. The island has suffered major damage over the years, shrinking from 820 acres in 1869 to just 125 in 1996. Money from the BP oil spill is planned to be used to restore the island here, however.
This island chain can be found nearby Breton Island and has a rich history in the area for recreation and fishing. Erosion has also played a major role in the decline of this island, however, along with the numerous hurricanes in the area. Many are predicting that these islands will be completely submerged in the coming decades.
This photo of Timbalier Island in 1999 does not reveal the way this island looks now. Since it is a barrier island, it is has suffered severe land loss. It can be found in Terrebonne parish.
Avery Island is not really a true island, but instead a landform surrounded by waterways and bayous. It is also a salt dome, so one can see the outline of the landmass along the horizon, providing its island name.
This island is found near Morgan City and has been used in various ways over the years--to raise cattle and drill for oil.
