If you’ve ever spent any time in New Orleans, especially the French Quarter, then you’ve probably come across a Lucky Dogs cart once or twice. A popular late-night snack for folks leaving Bourbon Street, Lucky Dogs have been an iconic part of the New Orleans street food scene for over 75 years. Let’s take a closer look at how this historic vendor came to be known as one of the most iconic hot dogs in Louisiana.

In 1947, Steve Loyacano had a bright idea: feed the patrons leaving the bar scene in the French Quarter.

There are plenty of restaurants in the French Quarter, but few would stay open as late as last call in the bars, which gave Loyacano the idea to build a hot dog cart and feed hungry (and drunk) patrons after the bars had closed.
In the 75+ years that Lucky Dog carts have been in New Orleans, they’ve become a bit of a celebrity.

Halloween costumes, Christmas ornaments, key chains... Locals and tourists find the most amusing ways to pay homage to one of the most unique street vendors in New Orleans.

Loyacano and his brother, Joe, ran the business together until Joe passed away in 1970, and then he sold the business to Doug Talbot. Though Talbot passed away in 2014, his family still continues to run the business today.
