Bed and breakfasts often get overlooked when it comes to finding a place to stay, but that’s about to change. Natchitoches is chock-full of charming bed and breakfasts that are ideal for a weekend getaway, and this particular bed and breakfast in Louisiana has a very unique claim to fame that movie buffs will immediately recognize.
Welcome to the Steel Magnolia House, one of the most historic bed and breakfasts in Louisiana.
The house was built by two Italian architects in the 1830s and initially intended to be a store, as it was centrally located in Natchitoches and near the Cane River. During the Civil War, it was used as a hospital for Confederate soldiers, and there are even rumors that this historic house played a role in the Underground Railroad.
In the 1900s, the house was actually moved back about 30 feet, away from the busy street and giving the house a beautiful front lawn.
This was no easy task! The entire house was dissembled brick by brick and rebuilt. All of the original bricks were reused, essentially maintaining the original architectural design.

The house has had many names in its nearly 200 years, but once the popular 1989 movie, “Steel Magnolias,” was filmed here, the house became forever known as the Steel Magnolias House.
Natchitoches is known for its meat pies, pictured above, but there are plenty of breakfast options to choose from, so both sweet and savory breakfast-eaters can enjoy something.
