7 Hidden Places In Louisiana Only Locals Know About

Sometimes, it’s a great idea to step off the beaten path so you can find those hidden spots that are the highlights of the town. From adventure parks to lake view restaurants, there are tons of local hidden gems that only the locals know about, and here are some of our favorites.

1. Briarwood
Formerly world renowned botanist Caroline Dormon’s home, the property is open to the public in March, April, May, October, and November and it’s certainly worth your while to pay them a visit. Take a stroll through the grounds to view several different species of wildflowers, do a little bird watching, and enjoy the views of the reflective pool.

2. Fairview Riverside State Park
This lesser known state park in Madisonville is perfect for a quick outdoors fix. Enjoy a lunch beneath a canopy of oak trees, spend some time on the Tchefuncte River, or take a walk down the nature trail. The trail is only a quarter of a mile, so it won’t take up too much of your time. The Otis House is also located in the park, and you’ll see it when you arrive. Built in the 1880s, the museum offers tours so you can walk through and see this well preserved home.

3. Holly Beach
Just because summer’s over doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy a beach trip. Holly beach is located in Cameron and it’s a perfect spot to spend the day. The beach is pretty secluded, so you won’t have to worry about the crowds like you would in Florida, and the beach is perfect for seashelling! You can also drive right on the beach, and camping on the beach is allowed so if you want to make a weekend out of it, don’t forget your tent!

4. Landry Vineyards
Wine lovers, this one’s for you. This West Monroe hidden gem is an absolute delightful way to spend your afternoon. Take a tour of their winery, see the grape fields, and of course, enjoy a tasting of some of their specialties. You’ll want to buy a few bottles to enjoy at home too, so be sure to visit the gift shop.

5. Rock Chapel
Tucked away in the woods of DeSoto Parish, this unique little chapel is a site to see. Built in 1891 by Carmelite monks, the chapel is all that remains from a fire that took the monastery in 1904. You can visit the chapel today if you’re up for a little adventure. Pro tip: call the Desoto tourist bureau to obtain a key to the locked gate. Rumor has it you can also get a key from a nearby gas station.

6. Tunk’s Cypress Inn
This secluded waterfront restaurant is the perfect spot to dine on a lovely fall day. The views of Lake Kincaid are almost as good as the food. Enjoy authentic Louisiana cuisine in this rustic atmosphere "where the food speaks for itself".

7. Chauvin Sculpture Gardens
Kenny Hill spent more than ten years building these amazing sculptures, and it’s truly something you have to see to believe. The sculptures are a mixture of biblical reference and personal struggles, a main theme you’ll note as you walk through is good vs evil.
