You can never run out of things to do (or eat) in Louisiana. We’ve compiled some of the most epic adventures every Louisianian should do, and included links to some of our previous articles. How many have you checked off your bucket list?
1. Tour the Atchafalaya River Basin
It’s the largest swamp in the country, clocking in at around 1.4 million acres. The best way to see the Atchafalaya River Basin is by boat with a knowledgeable tour guide who will teach you all about this river system and its importance to Louisiana.

2. Take a swamp tour
Even if you can’t get to the Atchafalaya River Basin, Louisiana is filled tons with bayous and swamps that are worth exploring. There are several tour companies that would love to take you down the river and let you get a close up look at these beautiful bayous. Make sure to bring your camera, as you’ll be surrounded by amazing scenery and wildlife.

3. Rent a houseboat for the weekend
Houseboats are a fun, unique way to spend the weekend. Beautiful scenery, surrounded by nature with just the essentials, sounds like heaven, right? Imagine sitting out on the deck watching the sunset over the water while you listen to the tranquil sounds of the wildlife around you.

4. Hike Driskill Mountain
At 535 feet, it’s a pretty simple ascent and you will get you bragging rights with your friends. It’s the tallest natural natural summit in Louisiana, and offers beautiful views of the area.

5. Tour Avery Island
The jungle gardens and bird city are a great way to spend an afternoon. Of course, Avery Island is known as being the home of Tabasco, and a trip to the island wouldn’t be complete without a tour of the factory and some Tabasco swag from the gift shop.

6. Hike the Barataria Preserve Trails
Immerse yourself in the bayous and swamps over at Barataria Preserve. Their trails are a mixture of dirt/gravel and boardwalk trails that will take you through parts of the swamps that you just couldn’t get to otherwise. You’re sure to see tons of wildlife and have amazing photo opportunities.

7. Explore Kisatchie National Forest
The Kisatchie National Forest covers 600,000 acres and spans across seven parishes. You could easily spend a year just exploring all of the trails. The forest is a beautiful place to explore and camp for the weekend. Rolling hills, swimming holes, and primitive camp sites make for a perfect weekend immersed in the wilderness.

8. Take a scenic drive

9. Visit a plantation
Louisiana has a ton of history, have you taken the time to learn about it? A trip to one of the many plantations is a wonderful way to spend the day.

10. Take a paddle trail
Explore our beautiful waterways at your own pace in a canoe/kayak. There are several places around that you can rent a kayak or canoe from. The Bayou Vermilion Trail is just one of many paddle trails that you can take.
