Have you ever wondered how some of our towns were named? While many of Louisiana’s cities and towns are named after railroad folks, there are a few that may have you shaking your head. For example, did you know that Maringouin means “mosquito,” or that Cocodrie means “alligator?” Our cities have such a unique history, and one of the most charming small towns in Louisiana was named after what was once believed to be a magical spring. Welcome to Abita Springs, Louisiana!
Tucked away in St. Tammany Parish, Abita Springs is a charming little town that’s perfect for a day trip.
It's said that the village was home to about 25 Choctaw families.

It wasn’t until 1887 that a local physician did some testing on the water, and it revealed that the springs were high in minerals with the potential for medicinal benefits.
For many years, doctors would recommend their patients take some time to visit Abita Springs for the "healing springs" and fresh air. It was very popular for New Orleanians to take the train up to Abita Springs to escape the city life and enjoy a much quieter pace. In the late 1880s, Yellow Fever was plaguing the Crescent City, but it wasn’t common in Abita Springs, which helped the town flourish into somewhat of a resort area.
