Resting on the north shores of Lake Pontchartrain, Covington is a little-big town with plenty of things to do. The city’s population hovers around 11,000 residents, but the downtown scene makes it feel like a charming small town that’s ideal for a weekend getaway. For places to stay in Covington, you can’t go wrong with booking a room at the Southern Hotel. Not only is the Southern Hotel one of the best hotels in Covington, Louisiana but it’s also one of the best hotels in Louisiana.
Affectionally nicknamed, "Covington's Living Room," the Southern Hotel is one of the most historic buildings in downtown Covington.
Boasting hot water, electricity, and carpeting, this hotel was leaps above anything like it during the time. The hotel changed ownership over the years and was a sanitarium and resort for about 50 years, helping those who suffered from respiratory illnesses. The building has been a drug store and even the city courthouse until 2011 when it was sold again, this time with the intention of bringing this stately hotel back to its glory days.

Located on East Boston Street, the hotel’s central downtown location makes it an ideal spot to call home while you explore Covington’s historic downtown scene.
Fun fact: Covington was originally named Wharton, after John Wharton Collins who established the town in 1813. He is buried in the city's graveyard not far from the hotel.
When hunger strikes, head to the hotel's restaurant to dine on incredible Louisiana and French-inspired cuisine.
