Louisiana, as a state, takes enormous pride and care to build and sustain our gorgeous public buildings and private homes. It comes as no surprise, then,  that we have more buildings on the National Register of Historic Places than anywhere else in the country!

This home was originally on Bayou Boeuf in Avoyelles Parish, and was built by Solomon Northrup who later wrote 12 Years a Slave. It was through building this house with architect and carpenter Samuel Bass that Northup was eventually able to escape slavery.

Trahan Architects, one of the leading firms in the nation, built this incredible example of modern architecture.
12) Old Lake Charles City Hall, Lake Charles, LA

This modern take on the classic shotgun home was designed by the legendary Frank Gehry for Brad Pitt's Make It Right Foundation. It can be found in the Lower Ninth Ward.
14) Doullet House, New Orleans, LA

A quintessential example of steamboat-inspired architecture, this unique gem was influenced by Japanese architecture that was on display at the 1904 World's Fair.
