What was once a bustling school full of the sounds of children’s laughter now sits abandoned, left to be reclaimed by Mother Nature. There’s something about abandoned places that draw us in. Whether it’s the history or the hauntingly beautiful images, the Kisatchie School certainly has a place in our hearts, and these images are truly mesmerizing. Let’s take a look at the history of this abandoned school in Louisiana that was once the center of a small community.
Nestled behind some towering pine trees, the Kisatchie School building still stands near the corner of highway 117 and 118 in Provencal, Louisiana.
In 1911, the entire town came together to build a school for their children. The Kisatchie School opened its doors in 1912, consolidating a few other schools nearby.
The town came together, and with the help of some knowledgeable architects, they were able to save the exterior of the building by siding it all with stucco, which still stands today.
Sadly, by 1962, the school had greatly decreased its school body. With less than 50 children between 12 grades, it simply wasn’t feasible to continue to keep the school open.
