I am somewhat a cliche'. I grew up running around barefoot on a farm in Kentucky.
I love writing, art, sunshine, all animals and my incredibly patient husband, who tolerates my "crazy animal lady" side.
Zombies have always been a source for entertainment, even before 1985’s Return of the Living Dead was “set” in Louisville or 2004’s Zombie Planet, filmed in Lexington. Television series such as Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead have become overnight cult favorites, and Louisville even has a huge zombie walk every August with thousands of participants. Zombies and zombie hunters have became celebrities, and now some people are concerned there could be a real zombie crisis some day. CBC errors and secretive maneuvers over the past decade likely help provide encouragement, even for someone with a slight imagination.
We all need to know to seek out somewhere safe if the crisis of a zombie apocalypse ever occurs. This list has been comprised with the safety and sanity of all zombie fighting or fearing Kentuckians in mind:
Places like Red River Gorge and Daniel Boone Forest are sustainable to anyone who has woodlands or military training. People survive now off the grid quite well. When you know where to hide, how to make traps and disguise scents, the woods can truly be your friend. Think tree house, not an average cabin…
This Richmond Army base is a storage facility for weapons, and of course has barracks, food and other necessities. That fact it is the primary storage for military grade weapons in Kentucky should really eliminate the need for any other questions.
Kentucky State Penitentiary, Pewee Valley, or any of the medium to maximum security prisons would make a secure home. Several of the prisons in Kentucky already have gardens that are tended by inmates, offering a source of sustainability. They have generators; People are usually dying to get out of prison, so why not reverse roles. Let them out, move us in.
Hopkinsville is home to one of our 3 military bases. Just like previously mentioned bases, this facility comes with food, weapons, and plenty of security. When it comes to zombie versus tank, tank always wins.
Well, they don’t actually have to be your friend, just someone with a well fortified home with minimal windows on the ground floor, solid fencing, and a well stocked cellar, including wine. Retired military? Even better.
This Hardin County base is supposed to be one of the most secure places to be in the world. Pretty much everything one needs from weaponry to easily preserved food is kept there. Not to mention, zombies don't really care about gold, do they?
This seems like the perfect solution, as most malls have a sporting goods store, a variety of food supplies, and bathrooms. In most cases, steel doors are in front of most stores that can be locked down inside, and plenty of room. There's usually metal framing that can be pulled across the primary entrances, along with roof access.
Personally, I am not sure why no one ever hides in something like a Kroger Superstore, Super Walmart or Meijers. To me, this seems logical. These facilities are usually tempored glass and concrete blocks, providing security. They are FILLED with food, water, pharmaceuticals, toiletries, gas grills, gas, gas and electric fireplaces, small generators, roof access, etc. Does this not seem like the logical place to be during an apocalypse when everyone is looking for these things? Yet… they never do that in the shows.
Absolutely not! According to zombie 101 that is one of the last places you want to actually go for assistance. This is where pre zombies tend to go zombie, turning health care workers into zombies, and creating the endless cycle of zombies as seen on various Hollywood examples. Hospitals are not safe.
Most Kentuckians see the zombie apocalypse as mere entertainment, but for those that believe, these are possible safe zones. Concerned citizens can get helpful tips, along with creating and becoming a part of a zombie apocalypse survival group. Those concerned with their possessions and vehicle during any undead outbreaks can reach out for zombie apocalypse insurance. I welcome the comments of readers who offer other safe from zombie zones, or ideas.
