As a state that appreciates its natural beauty, there are many places throughout Kentucky that work hard to maintain an untouched landscape. Nature preserves and state parks passionately pursue ongoing conservation efforts to keep the Bluegrass State beautiful, and we can enjoy a front row seat to their work. One such place is The Preserve at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill. This preserve offers miles of trails, serene natural beauty, and countless wildflowers that will soon be in full bloom and are an extraordinary sight to see.
Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill is located in historic Harrodsburg and was the third largest Shaker community in the United States between 1805 and 1910. It's now a popular destination for those who want to experience this restored community and beautiful property as it was over a century ago.
The Village is known for its Shaker-style buildings and endless white and stone fencing, but there is actually a vast area of land to explore. The entire Village is made up of 3,000 acres, and The Preserve is the perfect spot to spend a day and feel one with nature.
The Preserve conserves and shares native prairies, woodlands, watersheds, fields, canebrakes, and diverse wildlife, and is one of the most picturesque places in our state. You can easily spend an entire day just hiking the trails and relaxing on this historic land.
This time of year, the first of countless wildflowers are beginning to bloom. The Preserve is home to more than 500 plant species, which line the trails with soft colors throughout the spring and summer months.
The flowers can be seen popping up in gardens, along hiking trails, and in the gently rolling hills of the prairie. As the land is relatively untouched, it truly is a unique experience to see these blossoms in their natural state.
Bring your camera along, as you'll want to capture the beautiful blooms! You’ll likely also spot local and migrating birds, as well as many other types of wildlife.
There are 36 miles of trails to explore, with plenty of options for every level of adventure. Spring, summer, and fall are ideal for hiking through the fields and woods, and Shaker Village hosts a number of events and activities that also allow you to enjoy the land of The Preserve.
Shaker Village is a beloved destination in Kentucky - and not just for its history and community. The Village has maintained much of its past, but it has also protected the diverse landscape of The Preserve, where you'll soon find extraordinary blooming wildflowers.
