With dozens of state parks in Kentucky, often referred to as the “nation’s best,” there are bound to be a few that fall between the cracks. But with the addition of a new dock this spring, Lake Malone State Park in Dunmor needs to be on your radar immediately. Its lakeside location is a picture perfect getaway for summer fun in Kentucky’s natural playground.
Located outside of the small town of Dunmor, west of Bowling Green, Lake Malone is a Y-shaped body of water, with plenty of space to explore. It's recently received an upgrade with a lovely new dock, providing yet another reason to visit.
The new dock is complete with a gas pump and a nearby boat ramp. The lake is perfect for a variety of activities, as is the park itself. There's plenty to do to fill up a day trip or even a long weekend.
Near the lake is the park's campground, which boasts 24 standard electric sites, as well as a section for primitive camping. The grounds keep you close to the action and near all of the activities you'll want to enjoy.
For those without a boat, you'll definitely want to head to Lake Malone's beach. There's plenty of space to dig your toes in the sand, splash in the water and take in the stunning views of the landscape surrounding the lake.
Throughout the park, you'll find two easy-rated trails, that are ideal for family fun in the woods. The 1.5-mile Laurel Trail and the .25-mile Wildflower Trail provide picturesque views of the lake, thick forest, a variety of plant life and interesting rock formations.
The 788-acre Lake Malone is an angler's paradise. You can try your hand at catching channel catfish, largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and redear sunfish. And if you're without a fishing pole, ask about the fisher loaner program where you can check out equipment for free!
Life is better at the lake and the saying holds true at Lake Malone. This hidden park is one of the many treasures of the Kentucky State Parks system and it's patiently waiting for you to come visit.
