At a time when more and more people tend to read on some sort of electronic device, many still love the feel and experience of holding an actual book in their hands. Large bookstores, and even smaller local ones, are harder and harder to find, and it’s important that we support those that are still around. The Friends of the Lexington Public Library, an active non-profit, is doing their part with the Friends Book Cellar. This warehouse of used books is filled with an enormous collection of titles and it may just become your new favorite destination.
The Friends of the Lexington Public Library is a non-profit that works hard to support the city's library system. One of the main ways they do this is with the Friends Book Cellar — a used book warehouse located in the lower level of the Central Library.
Accessing the store is easy, with public parking adjacent to the library. If you've never experienced the library itself, definitely plan on spending some time on all of the floors; it is quite remarkable! If you're a lover of books, art, and the sought after quiet atmosphere of a library, then add this spot to your must-see list.
During your visit, be sure to head down to the lower level and the Friends Book Cellar. The used book warehouse originally opened in 1998 and is a hidden gem full of literary treasures in Lexington.
Volunteers spend countless hours receiving books and materials, organizing, sorting and preparing them to be sold. The space is very clean, clearly labeled, and easy to maneuver as you hunt down some new favorite books.
The bookstore is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., as well as the first Sunday of each month from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. While you're there, pick up a bag as well to support the library and have an easy way to carry all of those books you're bound to find.
The rows of tables and bookshelves are filled with a variety of titles — both new and old. The books are in great condition and are very reasonably priced. You'll find every genre of book, as well as DVDs, videos, books on tape, and more.
In addition to being open regular hours throughout the year, the Friends Book Cellar also hosts a massive sale that you can't miss. The next one is coming up in October and you can learn all about it here.
The library provides so many services to the community, and shopping at Friends Book Cellar is a great way to say thank you. Check it out during its regular hours or visit the sale, and see what books you can add to your own personal library!
