The classic roadside attraction is an American tradition. You may envision Clark Griswold loading up the “family roadster” and stopping by one of these so-called tourist traps. Kentucky is filled with unique stops that are perfect for stretching your legs and meeting the locals. In Calvert City, you’ll find just the place and it’s filled with plenty of interesting things to see. Hillbilly Garden and Toyland is the kitschy attraction you didn’t know you needed to visit.
If you ever find yourself at exit 16 off of Interstate 24 in Paducah, prepare for a little side trip. Hillbilly Garden and Toyland is the quintessential roadside attraction and delivers fun, quirkiness, history and local flavor all in one destination. It's off the beaten path, it's a little odd and maybe even a little creepy, but that just adds to its appeal.
As you drive down HWY 68W, you'll see the bizarre signs that will immediately perk your interest. You may be tempted to drive by, but if you need a break or even just a smile, stop by! Owner Keith has turned this former apple orchard into more than just his family's home. And he welcomes visitors every day of the year to explore his collections.
Hillbilly Garden has a little bit of everything. Ketih and his family are very nice and welcoming and if you have time, ask Keith for an individualized tour. The history of the property is very interesting - it's been everything from a barber shop to a gas station - and he sure likes to tell you all about it. He will also walk you through his massive toy collection, which is really quite something.
As you walk around the property, previous visitors recommend you keep an open mind and a sense of humor. Being a roadside attraction, this is obviously not the Metropolitan Museum of Art, nor is it an expensive, fancy vacation spot. It is what it is, which makes it charming, silly and classic.
At Hillbilly Garden you can expect to see a large toy collection, unique art made from everyday objects, sarcastic signs and even farm animals! It's folk art fun in a wacky attraction, right in the heart of western Kentucky.
As you travel throughout Kentucky, keep an eye out for Keith, his family and his roadside, quirky attraction. Leave with a smile and an appreciation for people whose goal is to entertain, share their passion and make others smile.
Roadside attractions may not be for everyone, but the sense of humor and passion behind this one is evident. Have you visited Keith at Hillbilly Garden?
