I am somewhat a cliche'. I grew up running around barefoot on a farm in Kentucky.
I love writing, art, sunshine, all animals and my incredibly patient husband, who tolerates my "crazy animal lady" side.
When it comes to an unforgettable Kentucky hike, Red River Gorge is the place to go. The area is a favored spot of campers, rock climbers, bikers, hikers and any type of outdoor enthusiast. Being part of the Daniel Boone National Forest, it is large enough to maintain total serenity despite its popularity.
There is an abundance of different trails scattered all around the forest, but some of the most popular are centered in the Red River Gorge Loop. This is a 36 mile area that provides an abundance of both marked and unmarked trails.
Within the sanctuary of the Gorge, hikers will find a thickly forested area for miles with an abundance of hidden natural arches, bridges, and waterfalls. Hiking to the top of any one of the arches can provide a view that goes on for miles. The bridges also allow us to gaze across the forest for a breathtaking view of Mother Nature’s masterpiece.
The waterfalls offer a perfect place to sit and relax. Each one has something special about it, regardless if it is a mid size or a tiny waterfall. Hikers can easily lose track of time by just gazing into the pools of fresh water.
Swift Camp Creek Trail is one of the favored hikes. This follows the creek for about seven miles from the top of the Gorge to below. Rainbow Trout can usually be seen swimming in the shallows and rhododendron is plentiful. The creek cascades down the mountain in a refreshing rush that makes you want to sit and enjoy it, at least for a while.
There are a variety of camping areas available around the area as well, along with cabin rentals. This allows hikers to choose their own comfort level while still enjoying Mother Nature. You can rough it by using tents and cooking by campfire, or you can rent a cabin with the conveniences of home.
The Red River Gorge is one of the most talked about places to get away for the weekend. There are beautiful forests all across the state, but for a memorable Kentucky hike, the Gorge comes highly recommended. No matter what area of the loop you choose, unforgettable scenery will be found. Do you ever hike at the Gorge? Where is your favorite place to go hiking in Kentucky?
