Natural wonders abound in Kentucky — both above and below ground. Our state is well-known for its expansive underground caverns, including Mammoth Cave and the Louisville Mega Cavern. What some don’t realize, however, is that there is another cave in Kentucky worth seeking out: Lost River Cave. Located in the far southwest corner of Kentucky, not only is Lost River Cave a fascinating place to explore, but it’s also home to an underground pool that’s absolutely captivating.
This is Hamilton Pool, a cerulean blue pool located in an underground grotto in Dripping Springs, Texas.
Lost River Cave in Bowling Green, Kentucky is a seven-mile long river that flows mostly underground. The river begins outside of the cave and then disappears under an extensive cavern. The cave's extensive history dates back to over 10,000 years ago and many incredible artifacts have been discovered within the cave and the land surrounding it.
In its previous life, Lost River Cave actually served as an underground nightclub known as Cavern Nite Club. Inside, you can still see the remnants of this establishment’s old staircases and chandeliers which is quite amazing!
Before the river flows into the cave, there are a few sections that can be viewed from the surrounding woods. The most notable is the "blue hole" - a shockingly blue pool that is 16 feet deep.
One of the coolest cave tours in Kentucky, exploring Lost River Cave by boat is one of those things that needs to be on every explorer's bucket list. As is visiting the cave itself and admiring the views both above and below ground.
Today, Lost River Cave continues to be a unique and captivating subterranean events venue, hosting everything from galas to yoga classes. With twinkle lights and the glassy Blue Pool, we can't think of a more magical cave experience in Kentucky!
