Kentucky’s natural beauty can surprise you with every turn down a new road or paddle onto a new lake. The feeling of stepping into the unknown, unsure of what you’ll find while floating or hiking through nature, can be addictive, especially within Kentucky’s State Parks. One of these parks is somewhat underrated, as you’ll likely find seclusion and plenty of natural wonder. Grayson Lake State Park is quietly waiting for you to come discover its secrets and explore all it has to offer.
Grayson Lake State Park is located in Olive Hill, east of Lexington. Its 1,512 acres are chock-full of natural wonders and each time you visit, you're likely to notice something new. The main feature of the park is, of course, its namesake, Grayson Lake. This winding body of water passes through the park and provides a natural playground, ready for exploring.
One unique feature of the park is the sheer sandstone canyons that encircle the lake. It makes for a picturesque canoe, kayak or paddle board trip, as the views are the best directly from the water. The park is beautiful all year long, but spring and fall may provide the most stunning scenery with the abundant rain and colorful trees.
If possible, you'll want to visit the park after a good rainfall. One of the many benefits of rain is the appearance of waterfalls and you'll find several throughout the park. But the best are typically spotted directly from the water. For example, this beauty can really only be seen if you can paddle and find it. There are a number of hidden coves and rock formations, beautifully nestled throughout the park.
There are two marked trails within the park: The Beech Hemlock Trail (.8 mile) and the Lick Falls Overlook Trail (3 miles). If you're looking for a peaceful walk through the woods, try the Beech Hemlock hike. You'll get lovely views of the lake and the two tree species that the trail's name suggests. The Lick Falls Trail is longer and a bit more strenuous, but still a manageable hike for those with some experience. The first part of the trail is more subdued, but your payoff is a seasonal waterfall and unique views of the lake from atop the ridge.
As is true with most of Kentucky, the park changes daily with the weather, time of year and those who visit. This hidden gem is the ideal place to come relax, get out on the water or see what surprises you can discover along the trails.
Grayson Lake State Park also offers an amazing golf course (Hidden Cove), a campground and a nearby marina where you can rent a boat to enjoy the lake.
