When exploring a town, historical site or sprawling farm, it doesn’t get more charming than doing it aboard a classic trolley. Many people have realized this, as Kentucky has several spots where you can hop on a trolley and take a relaxing ride, while taking in the sites. Trolleys are an important part of American history and today they are a timeless way to savor all Kentucky has to offer.
For a unique way to enjoy one of Louisville's historic areas, hop on the "Fat Friday Trolley." The trolley offers free rides on the last Friday of each month from 6pm - 10:30pm. From River Road and Story Avenue to Cannon's Lane, you pass by restaurants, shops and galleries, many with special entertainment or live music. It's a fantastic way to end the week, socialize and discover this lively part of the city.
When planning a trip to the state capitol, be sure to include a a trolley ride on your itinerary. April 3rd - October 27th, from 10am to 2:30pm (Tuesday - Saturday), a classic trolley loops through Frankfort, stopping at many attractions along the way. You can visit places such as the State Capitol Building, Buffalo Trace Distillery and Rebecca Ruth Candy.
When on a day trip to the Kentucky Horse Park, save time for a trolley ride around the grounds. Throughout the summer season, guests can enjoy a free 8-10 minute ride where they will learn interesting facts about the park and take in scenic views of this picturesque farm and museum.
Aboard this "Louisville City Fun Tour," you'll see just about every main attraction around town. The 75 minute trolley tour includes more than 30 attractions, such as The Belle of Louisville, the world's largest bat at the Louisville Slugger Museum and Churchill Downs.
Take a complimentary ride through Historic Downtown and the Lower Town Arts District. The trolley connects riders to Paducah attractions and points of interest including the National Quilt Museum, the riverfront and Wall to Wall Floodwall Murals. Rides are available Monday through Saturday, April-August, with service provided by the Paducah Area Transit System.
Climb aboard Lexington's classic green Colt Trolley to see all the city has to offer. The ride is free and covers a lot of ground, including Rupp Arena, University of Kentucky, Transylvania University, the historic Chevy Chase neighborhood and many more.
Disclaimer: you can not actually ride this trolley. However, since this is a list about trolleys in Kentucky, it seemed only fitting to wrap it up with a landmark eatery in Louisville. The classic trolley location on 3rd Street is worth its own day trip for a burger and fries. They are only open for lunch and only take cash, but don't let that deter you.
