Cumberland Gap National Historical Park is definitely an area worth exploring, and of course, we happen to think that the Kentucky side is a great spot to visit.
But most do head to Tennessee for the hiking trails, and for this particular trail (the Tri-State Peak Trail) that's where you'll start. But don't worry, this historic trail stretches into Kentucky and basically follows the state line, just as buffalo and soldiers did long ago. You will start the trail on the very tip of Tennessee, then head into Virginia, till you round the corner and end up in Kentucky again. Not only will you get the chance to stand in three states at once, but you will also be able to hike through three different states.
The Tri-State Peak Trail is a little over 2 miles, out and back, and features natural beauty and incredible evidence of the past.
While it does have a little over 600 feet in elevation change and is considered a moderate hike, it is still a great trail for all ages. Take your time and enjoy the scenery and historic points along the way. This trail can be both fun and educational.

And of course, the beauty of Cumberland Gap is undeniable.
Depending on the time of year, you'll see some seasonal creeks and waterfalls, as well as diverse plant life. Many visitors feel this hike is actually best when the trees are not filled with leaves, so you can also enjoy more of the views. Also along the way is the Tri-State Peak which sits at 1,890 feet ,so you should be able to get plenty of stunning views on your way to the state lines.
When you reach the Tri-State Peak portion of the trail, you can head under this shelter, and stand at a spot where three states meet at one point in Tennessee, Virginia, and of course, Kentucky.
