I write like it's my job - because it is! I have a Master's in English and love words: crossword puzzles, Scrabble games, Wordle, and, of course, good, old-fashioned books.
I'm a writer and editor at OnlyInYourState, and a contributing writer at Cincinnati Magazine. I love the Great Outdoors and am endlessly awestruck by this beautiful country of ours. Coffee keeps me going, yoga keeps me sane, my kids keep me grounded, and my writing keeps me inspired.
Once upon a time, general stores were community hubs. The original “superstore,” general stores had it all: goods and wares, fresh produce and breads, grocery items and household essentials, and often their own little restaurants, too. Today, these once-ubiquitous places are a rarity; something of an endangered species that harkens back to a bygone time. And in the tiny river town of Paducah, Kentucky, Troutt Old Time General Store and Market is the real deal: a bona fide general store complete with a bakery and deli, where folks come to find whatever it is they’re looking for — and a whole lot more.
There are many small towns in Kentucky that are well-worth visiting, and Paducah is one of our favorites. Located at the confluence of the Tennessee and Ohio Rivers, in the westernmost corner of Kentucky, there's nowhere quite like Paducah.
The store began as a booth at the Downtown Paducah Homegrown Farmers' Market, selling different varieties of heirloom vegetables. Businesses blossomed, and they soon outgrew their little market stall. After searching for just the right space, the Troutt Old Time General Store and Market opened at 433 N 4th St, Paducah, KY, 42001, seven years ago.
In true general store style, this place has a little bit of everything: handmade arts and wares, grocery items, garden supplies, gifts, jewelry, and even antiques.
Back in the day, general stores often had their own brands of clothing and goods. Troutt Old Time General Store has appropriated this tradition, creating a children's line of books, stuffed animals, blankets, and other heirloom-quality items.
In addition to its stellar selection of goods and wares, this Paducah gem also has its own bakery and deli. People rave about the hot lunches here, with the Chicken with Wild Rice Soup a major crowd pleaser.
