Kentucky has its fair share of charming restaurants where you can step back in time while enjoying a delicious home-cooked meal. In Ft. Mitchell, you’ll find one of these timeless gems in the Greyhound Tavern. Since 1921, this location has been serving up delightful food in the heart of a bustling area, but with a cozy, small-town feel. Step through the doors of the Greyhound Tavern and you’ll be glad you did.
Located in charming Ft. Mitchell, Greyhound Tavern is a landmark in the neighborhood as well as a favorite Northern Kentucky destination. The building was built in 1921 and originally opened as the "Dixie Tea Room," where ice cream and other treats were served. In the 1930's, it was purchased by Al Frisch, who renamed it "Greyhound Grill," after his brother, a Greyhound dog trainer.
Location has always been key to the restaurant's success. It was located at the end of the line for the streetcars, which then turned around to head back to Cincinnati. This picture may be difficult to see, but it shows two of the streetcars with Greyhound behind them. At this time, Mr. Frisch's mother and sister did the cooking and eventually the ice cream parlor was eliminated and the menu was expanded. They even added a lively beer garden!
Greyhound Grill kept its name for quite awhile, until eventually becoming Greyhound Tavern. The building was given a facelift, as was the menu, while still keeping its timeless appeal.
When dining at Greyhound Tavern, you'll feel as if you've been welcomed into a classic southern home. Whether you're enjoying an intimate night out for two or a large family meal, there's a spot for you in one of the tavern's classic rooms. The furnishings are warm, inviting and create a lasting impression.
One of the new favorites at Greyhound Tavern is the exterior porch, complete with fireplace and seasonal decorations. Although it's near a busy street, you'll lose yourself in the food and ambiance of the Tavern's newest addition.
And of course, the food. You'll either need to visit several times or come with a never-ending appetite because there are so many favorites on the menu. You can't miss the fried chicken, Kentucky Hot Brown, the hot slaw or really any of the sides. There really isn't a bad choice. Their weekend brunch is a great time to sample a little of everything.
What is a tavern without a few great beverages? Greyhound Tavern stays true to its roots with an outstanding Bourbon Slush. But don't ask for the recipe - it's a secret! Try a drink in the tavern or enjoy it out on the patio.
When traveling through Northern Kentucky, plan on stopping by Greyhound Tavern. This award-winning charmer has all of the timeless appeal you could want, alongside a traditional menu that will leave you longing to come back.
