I am somewhat a cliche'. I grew up running around barefoot on a farm in Kentucky.
I love writing, art, sunshine, all animals and my incredibly patient husband, who tolerates my "crazy animal lady" side.
There is no question that Kentucky is a beautiful state with some incredible scenic views. Many of these breathtaking images are gorgeous to look at, but frightening at the same time when you realize how high above a landing spot you are. Gazing down at the lush forests and rolling rivers, we can become mesmerized by our state’s natural beauty. Don’t be misled by the title, each of these photographs shows Bluegrass State scenery at its finest. It is the drop to get to that scenery that is somewhat terrifying, especially if you happen to be afraid of heights.
Here are 12 gorgeous but terrifying views of Kentucky:
This view of Covington is seen from the look out at Devou Park. This renowned spot is a favored of locals who like a wider view of the city. The fact that it is a wider view from such a high altitude can be a little intimidating.
This mysterious building in Kentucky Lake was once a grain elevator. Now it appears and disappears with the rise of the river. It may not look that creepy from a distance, but close up, it can easily send a shiver down the spine. The fact that it still stands proves it was made well though.
Home to the renowned moonbow and a beautiful daily view, Cumberland Falls is one of the most popular spots in Kentucky for good reason. One can feel the sheer power of the water as it crashes over the edge and into the continuing river below. The sun or moon glistening off the lake and falls is picture perfect. Rocks tend to be slick around the falls and river, so when enjoying the view, be aware of where you stand.
When it comes to Sinkholes, Kentucky ranks #10 in the nation, according to WLKY The view of a sinkhole is normally not pretty, and tends to make me cringe. The reality that Kentucky sits atop the world’s largest cave system also adds to that cringe.
There is a boat that has sat upon the Ohio River for more than a century, slowly becoming part of the river itself. The plants have taken over, and grow through the deck and onto the bow of the ship. This hidden ship along the Ohio is overlooked, but that doesn’t make its existence here any less creepy.
This mountain is home to the highest point in Kentucky, which can be both beautiful and terrifying when you look over the edge. The view is something you will likely never forget.
These naturally formed bridges offer another gorgeous view where one has to maintain footing if anywhere near the edge. Loose rocks can be a hazard, but the view is well worth the risk. Kentucky wears the forest like a blanket all across the state.
This unique feature of Pine Mountain just doesn’t seem exactly right. One has to wonder exactly why someone would chain two enormous rocks together with a huge chain. Realistically, the chain would snap if either fell, so it is likely just a walkway chain. It does stimulate the curiosity, and make one a little nervous if they actually thought it would hold the rock.
The rich smell of this heavily wooded area is almost hypnotic in spots. Corporations have been bottling Pine scents to put in cleaning products and aromatherapy for decades, and here it is natural. The higher look out points provide the best aerial views, but always make sure your footing is secure.
The lookout at this nature sanctuary in Lexington offers a breathtaking view of some of the areas finest natural beauty. The height is important to get the perspective, but that never helped the butterflies in my stomach.
There are so many breathtaking views of the Gorge, it is difficult to choose just one. The entire area is awe inspiring, but a fall from any one of these perfect look outs could easily be devastating. This particular photo depicts the scenic look from the top of the mountain at Red River.
This pit at the renowned Mammoth Cave leads our vision down into the deep, dark depths of a seemingly endless hole in the earth. Gazing down into the darkness just kinda gives some of us a shiver down our spine.
These unique views may not exactly make your blood run cold… because it is our beautiful Kentucky. However, you have to admit the sheer height or age factor can be a little unsettling. These are just a few that I found intriguing, but I’m sure you all know a lot more. What Kentucky views give you a little twinge of both awe and concern?
