I am somewhat a cliche'. I grew up running around barefoot on a farm in Kentucky.
I love writing, art, sunshine, all animals and my incredibly patient husband, who tolerates my "crazy animal lady" side.
Sometimes the best way to get away from it all is a relaxing scenic drive down a road to nowhere in Kentucky. One of the best places to enjoy breathtaking scenic views all along the way is the Red River Gorge Scenic Byway. This is one of the most beautiful drives in the state any time of year, and traffic is never really an issue.
Do not be intimidated by a road to nowhere in Kentucky, often times a drive like the one in Red River Gorge is like a breath of fresh air. Here are 10 reasons to take a ride to nowhere just for fun:
There is never really a lot of traffic along the Gorge Byway. It is a route for many, but for others it is the perfect place to just drive and appreciate the scenery. Some people take the route strictly for the views on their way to and from work.
Sometimes just driving past isn’t enough. For those moments, you will find a variety of scenic overlooks with parking available along the byway. You can take a few minutes to stop and really soak up the serenity of the gorge from different directions.
The scenic byway becomes an artist’s palette of color during the Fall season. The forest comes alive with vivid orange, yellow, brown and red shades, with the spattering of Pine and Cedar trees giving a flash of green. The colors are almost mesmerizing and make for a beautiful backdrop for photos.
This is a lovely way to enter the gorge. You just drive through part of it. The Nada Tunnel is always surrounded by color, and the darkness leads to a paradise on the other side with a burst of life and color.
There are some old bridges along the way. The lush forest frames these metal monoliths, creating a pretty as a postcard view. The bright green provides the perfect contrast to the dull gray of concrete and rusted metal.
There are lots of trees in the gorge, which makes for a shady drive in many spots. The vivid greens during the summer let just enough light through to brighten the way while keeping things cool and comfortable.
The Red River is what the gorge is named for. This powerful river teams with life and offers an abundance of refreshing spots to relax, river side. You can pull off and do some fishing, go for a swim or bring your boat. Relaxing by the river can put the life back into life.
Red River Gorge is a local and visitor favorite. It is one of the most gorgeous spots in Kentucky and one of the most popular for driving, camping, boating, fishing and just relaxing. Pictures just cannot do the area true justice.
