I write like it's my job - because it is! I have a Master's in English and love words: crossword puzzles, Scrabble games, Wordle, and, of course, good, old-fashioned books.
I'm a writer and editor at OnlyInYourState, and a contributing writer at Cincinnati Magazine. I love the Great Outdoors and am endlessly awestruck by this beautiful country of ours. Coffee keeps me going, yoga keeps me sane, my kids keep me grounded, and my writing keeps me inspired.
There are numerous iconic dishes in the Bluegrass State, from burgoo and hot browns to bourbon balls and fried chicken. But none are quite as delicious as transparent pie. Made from a batter of butter, sugar, cream, and vanilla that’s poured into a simple pie crust, transparent pie truly is the sum of its parts. It’s darn delicious and absolutely legendary, with Magee’s Bakery in Maysville becoming quite famous for this iconic Kentucky dish.
If you live in Kentucky, you know what transparent pie is. It's a dreamy combination of simple ingredients that creates something truly divine.
Transparent pie dates back to the 1800s, when home cooks in small farm kitchens in the Bluegrass had to be creative with the ingredients they had on hand; simple things like butter, sugar, cream, and eggs.
The transparent pies from Magee's are world famous and have been featured on everything from Fodor's, Southern Living, NPR, and numerous local and state media outlets.
Even George Clooney, a Kentucky boy himself, is a Magee's devotee! Clooney is rumored to stock up on pies from Magee’s Bakery when he’s in town, and has also been known to bring them to studios and sets, too.
A labor of love that lasted 77 fruitful years, in 2019, the Dicksons retired and the bakery was sold to Comprehend Inc., a developer that bought the rights to the Magee's name and signature recipes. They moved the original Maysville store to a new location. The Lexington shop remains at 726 E. Main Street.
Of course, you can pick up *other* pies from Magee's. During the holidays, the pumpkin and pecan pies fly out the door, gracing many a Thanksgiving table in the Bluegrass.
But we're partial to the transparent pie, a delicious and delightful dessert that's a true Kentucky icon!
Have you tried the transparent pie from this legendary bakery before? Did you know about this iconic pie shop in Maysville, Kentucky? If you can’t visit the original Magee’s in Maysville, there’s also a Lexington location… and the bakery even ships their pies, too!
