I am somewhat a cliche'. I grew up running around barefoot on a farm in Kentucky.
I love writing, art, sunshine, all animals and my incredibly patient husband, who tolerates my "crazy animal lady" side.
Kentucky is known for good, old fashioned southern cooking, and delicious food combinations. Not everything we eat is considered desirable by people in other states. Some visitors acquire a taste for Kentucky cuisine, others may run screaming for the nearest familiar fast food restaurant.
Here are 10 food combinations in Kentucky that may require an acquired taste:
This is a wildly popular food combination that spread to a lot of small diners across the states. Some people use sorghum, others use syrup and occasionally people go plain.
Different parts of the state like their barbecue different ways. Sweet, spicy, smoky, tangy are all favored flavors. Kentuckians can eat barbecue on mutton, beef, pork, chicken and even fish. Some even put it on vegetables and dip French fries in it.
There are countless ways to enjoy a fresh picked batch of greens, but boiling them down with a fatty ham hock seems to be the most common way. The little chunks of ham that fall off into the pot just make them even tastier, if you like pork.
Fixing liver in a way that doesn’t make it taste like shoe leather can be a challenge. Soaking it in milk, then battering it and frying it up in a cast iron skillet with lots of onions is the southern way.
Made from a grass with a high sugar content, this sweet syrup has been popular for centuries. It's used on pancakes, sausage, and makes a great addition to almost any country breakfast.
This is another cheap southern meal that uses Great Northern Beans, onions, garlic, and fried sausage. It goes perfectly with cornbread and fills the stomach for hours.
This is a normal country snack, as cornbread is often part of a southern meal. The thought of soggy bread in milk may not sound appealing, but it's truly delicious.
This simple fruit dish is one of the easiest salads to make. It has been passed down for generation to generation in our family. Cut a pear in half, put a dollop of mayo or miracle whip, sprinkle with some cheddar, and add a cherry. It is delish.
Most people think of zucchini as a tasty side dish, especially fried. However, add brown sugar, cinnamon, spices, flour, and heavy cream, than blend well. Pour it in a pan, bake, and you have a tasty snack. Sprinkle it in sugar, and you have dessert bread.
Kentuckians don’t have a sensitive palette, but they do have a very versatile one. We believe in a little grease in our food some of the time and it shows in our dishes.
