Central Kentucky is beautiful with its rolling hills and scenic back roads, but if you’ve never explored the borders of Kentucky, you’re definitely missing out. All along Kentucky’s state line, you’ll find a variety of landscapes, and when you head east to the Pine Mountain Range, you may not even realize you’re still in Kentucky. Right along the border, spilling over into Virginia, is Breaks Interstate Park, a rare dual-state park that has the most spectacular views. There’s a lot to do and see in this incredible park, both in Kentucky and Virginia. If it isn’t already, definitely add it to your Kentucky bucket list.
Breaks Interstate Park is located along the border of Kentucky and Virginia and is appropriately known as the "Grand Canyon of the South."
The five-mile-long gorge plunges to 1,650 feet and makes for some of the best views in the region. As a part of the Pine Mountain range, this is the only "break" in the ridgeline, which was discovered by Daniel Boone himself. It seemed only appropriate to name this unique park Breaks Interstate Park, given its important location.

When you head east through Kentucky and eventually over the Virginia border, you'll immediately know you've reached a special place. The park is owned and run by both Kentucky and Virginia, which is a rare set up for parks throughout the country.
The seven overlooks throughout the park are arguably its most popular feature as they make the incredible views fairly accessible. The Stateline overlook, shown above, gives you sweeping views of both states and is incredibly picturesque all year long and any time of day. You can access the park's map here. Come to check out all of the scenic views, trails, and other features of the park.
In addition to the scenic overlooks, you can see the park in many other ways, depending on how adventurous you want to get.
You can zip above and through the mountains, taking in those views while flying through the sky. If you want to stay closer to the ground, check out the horseback riding opportunities that take you through scenic areas of the park.
Breaks also offers unique adventures such as Elk Tours and a chance to experience the park on the waters of the Russell Fork River.
The park's website is very thorough and outlines every possible adventure, so be sure to start planning your trip there. You can stay within the park at a campground or a lakeside cabin, among other options, and there are hiking trails and abundant natural beauty to experience throughout your visit.
