North of Bowling Green, in Warren County, you’ll find a lovely hidden gem that is the perfect Kentucky escape. Shanty Hollow is a man-made lake that is spring and stream-fed, thanks to the damming of the Clay Lick Creek. It’s a little known spot that locals and visitors agree is a must-see, Kentucky treasure.
Shanty Hollow Lake was created in 1951 and continues its natural beauty today while being both stream and spring fed. While some of the land surrounding the lake is privately owned, the water is accessible to the public and there is also an adjoining hiking trail if you prefer to stay on ground.
There are nearby options to rent a paddle boat, kayak or canoe or you can always bring your own. Fishing, hiking, and star-gazing are also favorite past times around Shanty Hollow.
The hiking trail is about a mile long and takes you out and back. You'll walk alongside part of the lake for awhile and will also cross sections perfect for rock climbing. While it's a fairly easy trail, there are some tricky spots and definitely watch out for mud and high water in the rain.
Your reward as you reach the end of the trail (if there's been enough rain) is a surprising waterfall, pooling beneath a cavern. You'll definitely wonder why this spot is not better known, as it's so beautiful and serene.
Shanty Hollow Lake and Trail are located at 1198 Shanty Hollow Rd. Bowling Green, KY 42101. There is a parking lot next to the lake and it makes a great excursion if you're in the area.
Shanty Hollow Lake is a quiet, remote Kentucky destination that truly warrants a visit. The picturesque water, along with the inviting trail, make it a great place to explore and escape.
